Dan Nuttall
Artist member since 2018
Toronto , Ontario
Dan Nuttall has a professional background in the natural sciences and design. Much of his art practice is based on this background and, unsurprisingly, his work tends to focus on issues such as ecology, biodiversity, the beauty of nature, and perceptions of landscape. Of late Dan has been doing more sculpture than painting - spending a lot of time in rural southwestern Ontario. A member of the Norfolk Poetter's Guild in Norfolk County, Ontario, his renderings of the purely sensual experience of beauty in nature has a deeper underlying concern for the planet and its ecology.
Q+A
Favourite book
I don't know if it's a favourite, but I just finished reading "HELD" by Anne Michaels. There are many passages that placed me in a contemplative reverie - usually around the big themes in life - time, the nature of love, presence/absence, the finite/infinite, the living and the dead, how they are connected. I think if someone was in a fragile state this might be a difficult read. At times, i put the book down due to overwhelming emotion.
Beverage of choice
Dirty Martini, French 75, Amaretto Sour, Manhattan, soda and Ontario sour cherry juice.
During my breaks, I tend to ...
Try to remember what traditional working life was like. I'm an artist, I put in the same amount of hours, but i regard all time, incluidng sleep time or studio time as FLEX time. It's all about perspective and intent. I'm intentional!
What artists do you admire right now?
Julie Mehretu, Katharine Harvey, Francis Bacon, Denyse Thomasos, Anselm Kiefer, Helen Frankenthaler, Mitchell, Syd Solomon, William Fisk, Gerald Folkerts, Richard Billmeier, Tony Calzetta.
Why is it important for people to have art in their home or life?
It's critical to have stimuli that remain perpetually enigmatic. Art can serve as a daily touchstone for connecting with memory and meaning - or untapped impulses. I paint birds for example because I find them joyful while I like the openness in abstraction...
What kind of artwork do you have in your home?
I need more nudity, more eros. But, in general, everything, and only a fraction is my own work - I need the work of other artists to stimulate me! I have the work of several Canadian and NYC artists in my home and they serve as touchstones to both creativity and place.
