Dan Nuttall

Artist member since 2018
Toronto , Ontario

Dan Nuttall has a professional background in the natural sciences and design. Much of his art practice is based on this background and, unsurprisingly, his work tends to focus on issues such as space and sensing, notions of landscape and habitat, and the experiences of non-human animals. Of late Dan has been spending a lot of time in rural southwestern Ontario. His rendering of the purely sensual experience of beauty in nature has a deeper underlying concern for the planet and its ecology.

Q+A

Favourite book

I am currently reading Utopia Parkway a biography about artist Joseph Cornell whose shadow box assemblages focussed on some of my favourite themes in art: birds, memory, meaning and adoration!

Beverage of choice

Any cocktail my husband makes - he's like a barista, a sommelier and a mixologist rolled into one!

During my breaks, I tend to ...

Sketch, read, listen to music and podcasts and videos about life and art - inspiration comes from all angles.

What artists do you admire right now?

Bacon, Frankenthaler, Mitchell, Syd Solomon, William Fisk, Gerald Folkerts, Richard Billmeier, Tony Calzetta.

Why is it important for people to have art in their home or life?

Art can serve as a daily touchstone for connecting with memory and meaning. I paint birds for example because I find them joyful while I like the openness in abstraction...

What kind of artwork do you have in your home?

Everything, and only a fraction is my own work - I need the work of other artists to stimulate me! I have the work of several Canadian and NYC artists in my home and they serve as touchstones to both creativity and place.
